What issues causes carpet to look dingy?
The main reason a carpet shows signs of premature wear is because of improper maintenance.Soil damages carpets as well as making it look dirty. The main problem caused by soil is called fiber abrasion. Fiber abrasion is created by dirt particles scratching and scraping the fiber surface. Scratches and scrapes block light reflection causing these areas to look even dirtier and gray.
Wear is a combination of several things. Soil, heavy traffic, loss of fibers, improper vacuuming, improper cleaning and time all contribute to a worn carpet.
Filtration soiling is caused by smog, soot, dust, carbon monoxide and other microscopic airbourne pollutants that pass through the carpet pile. As the pollutants pas through the carpet, the fibers act as a filter to remove the fine particles or airborne soil. The pollutants build up in the carpet and slowly turn from light gray to black. The longer this problem goes untreated, the more difficult it is to correct.
Once these areas become charcoal or black in color, an improvement is about all one can hope for. Due to the oily nature of filtration soil, once the problem has reached this stage, a professional cleaning is required. With our Host® dry carpet cleaning systems, I have had success removing these soil lines. It does take us more time and can be a bit labor intensive but I am happy to do the job. The sooner your call us, the cleaner your carpeting will look.
